Greenwich Academy's water polo team captured their third straight New England Championship with a 12-6 win over Phillips Exeter. The win capped off an undefeated season against NEPSAC opponents with the only blemish on the team's record being a close-fought 17-19 loss to local rival Greenwich High School.
GA entered the Liquid Four as the number one seed and faced Deerfield in the semi-final. While the opening minutes were tight, the Gators won their first contest 15-5 with strong goal keeping from Casey G. and solid offensive output from Borden W. - 8 goals, Kayla Y. - 3 goals, and 2 from Sydney H.
GA was lights out in the first half against Exeter who had beaten Williston Northampton earlier in the day. Strong defending and solid goalkeeping kept the Big Red away from the back of the cage which allowed the Gators to take a 7-0 lead into intermission. Borden and Kayla continued to pace the Gators offensively wth 5 and 3 goals respectively while Lily S. notched two more with Sydney and Kaitlin G. scoring one goal a piece.
GA says goodbye to 6 seniors who will be sorely missed -- Borden, Camille, Annabelle, Paulina, Sydney and Casey. We wish them the best in their next endeavors and look forward to hearing about Borden's exploits on Harvard's water polo team next year.
