A Message from Board Chair Alexandra Steel Scott ’00 P’34, ’36
May 29, 2026
Dear GA Community,
I am writing to share that Head of School Margaret Hazlett has informed the Board that she will be leaving Greenwich Academy after the conclusion of this school year.
We are very grateful to Margaret for her dedicated service and leadership, and thank her for her many contributions to Greenwich Academy. Under her tenure, our school has experienced record-breaking applications, engagement with the opportunities provided by the Glenville campus, the completion of the renovated turf fields, and the advancement of our athletic programs. She has also continued our long tradition of excellence, celebrated through Spirit Days, Gator Days, and many school-wide service projects. Please take some time to read her reflections on GA.
The Board of Trustees has been working closely with Margaret to ensure a seamless transition. After a search process that included both internal and external candidates, the Board has appointed current Assistant Head of the Upper School, Reed Minor, to serve as the Interim Head of School. She will assume the role on July 1, 2026 and continue until a new Head of School has been selected and can begin. Reed’s exceptionally thoughtful, effective leadership over her 16 years at Greenwich Academy gives us great confidence that she is the right person to hold this transitional interim role. Moreover, as we celebrate our bicentennial year, she deeply understands the traditions and uniqueness of GA.
The Board has established a Search Committee and empowered it to conduct a comprehensive, national search for GA’s next Head of School. The Committee will be Co-Chaired by Trustees Annie Day Thorp ’02 P’31, ’33, WCK P’36 and Trent Carmichael P’13, ’15, ’21, ’38, WCK P’17. They will be leading a thorough, deliberate process, and look forward to sharing more information, including opportunities for community engagement, later this summer.
For nearly 200 years, Greenwich Academy’s traditions, and its unwavering commitment to character and excellence, have prepared our girls for futures of boundless potential. Skilled, passionate leadership and the loyalty of our community have been essential elements of our success. The Board is deeply grateful for both.
We have great confidence in Greenwich Academy’s future, and are enormously excited as we begin this next chapter. Thank you all for your support and partnership.

A Message from Head of School Margaret Hazlett

Dear Greenwich Academy Community,
As you have heard by now, I have informed the Board that I will step down as Head of School after the conclusion of this school year.
Serving this community has been my great honor. And what a time to be at GA as we begin to celebrate a huge milestone—200 years! Pretty amazing. I find myself reflecting on the girls and women who have walked these halls. It is these Greenwich Academy girls who have reminded me what resilience looks like in the face of an ever-changing world, the power and impact of sustained hard work, and the importance of character and friendship in shaping lives. Their courage, curiosity, and compassion are just some of the things I will proudly carry with me into my next chapter. I couldn’t feel more hopeful and confident about GA’s next 200 years and beyond as we strengthen our longstanding tradition of excellence.
This school’s longevity is a testament not only to our girls, but to the steadfast loyalty and dedication of our community: faculty and staff, alumnae, friends, and of course, the parents. I remain committed to working with the Board and Senior Administrative Team to support a smooth transition to Reed, and will do everything I can to ensure continuity for the girls.
I want to thank you for your support and for the privilege of leading this remarkable school. Go Gators!

Margaret Hazlett
Head of School
Interim Head of School Reed Minor P’30, ’33
It is with deep respect and love for the GA community that I will step into a new role as Interim Head of School for our bicentennial year. I want to thank Margaret Hazlett for her leadership and generosity and the GA Board of Trustees for their partnership and trust in me.
The best periods of transition are also seasons of growth, and this year will be a time of both celebration and careful planning. As we celebrate the glorious old photos and traditions of the last 200 years, we will also set the stage for the next 200. And, if my 16 years here have taught me anything, it is that there is nothing Greenwich Academy cannot do. By every metric, our school is in a position of great strength, and I remain committed to supporting each and every member of our community with the thoughtfulness and care that are the hallmarks of GA.
It was in the late 1990s when I first encountered GA, on a playing field, lined up against the Gators as a member of Deerfield’s varsity field hockey team. I remember being struck that day by the spirit and talent of the GA girls (I also remember losing). Upon joining this community in 2010 as an Upper School English teacher, I was pleased to discover that the same spirit and strength I saw on the field were alive in my classrooms. GA students are talented and joyful, confident yet humble, and they inspire each other to be ever more curious and kind. From the Lower School’s excursions “Into the Wild” to the Middle School’s Invention Convention to the 100 Upper School speeches delivered this year in pursuit of student government positions, GA girls question and take risks.
In my 12 years as Co-Director of College Counseling, I have articulated the value and values of a GA education and have had the privilege of reading hundreds of applications from GA seniors as they celebrate their comfort with rigor, display their empathetic hearts, and pronounce their willingness to lead. Chloe Cerniglia, the 2026 class-elected graduation speaker, said about her classmates at Commencement: “They have this instinct and vigor I don’t find anywhere else. I have friends who I believe could run and win for president, who are going to become chemical engineers, artists, professors, and lawyers. I learn as much from my friends as my teachers, when I am in awe of something someone says in my classes.” I, too, have felt that sense of awe in my work as a teacher, Group XI dean, college counselor, and Assistant Head of the Upper School. And as a parent (in the great classes of 2030 and 2033), I am grateful for the everyday experience of my girls. It is for my daughters, and yours, that I wake up every day energized to serve.
I want to end by thanking GA’s exceptional faculty, staff, division heads, and administrative team for their leadership and partnership. During this time, I will listen and lead, communicating the good work that gets done on our campus each day and connecting our community as we celebrate and plan. Together, we will build on our legacy of excellence and character, we will deepen our commitment to educating girls and women for the future, and we will fearlessly embrace the opportunities of our next century—just as GA girls have always done.
More from me soon. For now, wishing you a restful start to summer.
