The Associate Teacher program at Greenwich Academy was founded in 1988, and has become a model for independent schools around the country. During their two years here, ATs have the opportunity to hone their craft in a supportive teaching and learning environment. Over the course of the program they will:

•    Work closely with two mentor teachers and the AT director
•    Prepare and teach lessons in reading, writing, math, and social studies
•    Work with head teachers to care for students’ academic, emotional, and social well-being
•    Meet weekly with other ATs and the program director
•    Receive regular feedback from mentor teachers and other administrators
•    Have access to myriad professional development opportunities, on and off site
•    Have GA financial support in pursuing graduate studies
•    Coach or run after-school enrichment classes, if they choose
•    Develop skills to lead their own classrooms

Requirements

All ATs are encouraged to complete some graduate course work so that they experience the benefit of combining the practical training of their work at GA with the theoretical learning that takes place in graduate school. Many ATs choose to complete their degrees over the course of the two years in order to improve their credentials for the job-search process. Once associate teachers have been accepted into the program, it is their responsibility to apply to a master's degree program in education at the university of their choice. 

Compensation

First-year ATs will earn a stipend of $34,000; second-years $35,000. In addition, GA will subsidize your graduate education with study grants totaling up to $15,750 over two years. School housing or housing assistance will be available.

Greenwich Academy welcomes one- and two-year Middle School and Upper School Teaching Fellows in a program that includes housing, benefits, and financial support of graduate study. In any given year, GA supports Fellows in several academic departments.

Fellows enjoy the professional support of both academic and administrative mentors. With a modified teaching schedule, Fellows are able to take full advantage of other aspects of campus life, and many coach, serve as advisors, and support student publications or clubs. Mentors offer periodic observations, bi-weekly meetings, and professional development opportunities in a collaborative setting.

Fellows who wish to pursue graduate work during their time here are encouraged to do so and will receive financial support from GA. Recent Fellows and new teachers have participated in graduate study at Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English, Columbia University, Bank Street Graduate School of Education, and Manhattanville College.

Penn Fellows

Greenwich Academy is a member of a small consortium of independent schools in the University of Pennsylvania’s Day School Teaching Residency Program. GA Teaching Fellows who participate in this program pursue a two-year Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) at Penn during their tenure.

This program, which provides an innovative curriculum taught by a combination of Penn’s Graduate School of Education faculty and senior administrators from cohort schools, is designed to attract and train some of the most promising new and aspiring teachers. GA covers the majority of our Penn Fellows’ graduate school tuition.
