MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Middle School Students in the Jump Rope for Heart programPhysical Education plays a vital role in the education of the whole student. Our program includes the development of motor skills, physical fitness, knowledge and understanding of human movement and personal capabilities. Physical Education provides situations for learning to compete as well as to cooperate with others in striving for the achievement of common goals. Positive experiences at this age level seek to develop the concept of continued participation in an active lifestyle beyond the school years.

Group V and VI:
The Group V and VI Physical Education course is organized around a rotating instructional format. The school year is divided into trimesters. The class is separated into four sections. Each section rotates through four different units within each trimester. A Physical Education specialist teaches the activities.

In the fall, Group V and VI concentrate on units in field hockey, soccer, games, and touch football. The winter units are basketball, floor hockey, squash, and volleyball. Girls also have the opportunity to elect to participate on the Middle School Ice Hockey Team in lieu of the winter instructional units. In the spring our units consist of fitness activities, lacrosse, tennis, and softball. The emphasis at this level is skill development, listening, cooperation, sportsmanship, fitness and problem solving. Each sports unit covers basic skills and concepts. Lead up games and small game competitive experiences develop confidence, control, eye-hand coordination, poise, and the strategies of attack and defense. Girls are encouraged to play a variety of positions within each sport and to share leadership responsibilities.

Group VII
Group VII is an exciting year in the curriculum. Interscholastic competition begins at this level and all girls participate on the team they elect. In the fall, girls may compete on either the field hockey or volleyball team. In the winter, the options are basketball, ice hockey, or non-team instructional squash. Lacrosse and softball are the team choices available in the spring. For each sport the girls are assigned to a team. All teams are of equal ability and each girl is expected to participate in all games scheduled for her team. Mandatory team practice time is scheduled during the school day. In all sports, skills are polished and techniques of offense, defense, court strategy, organization, and responsibility are emphasized.

Group VIII
In Group VIII, each trimester girls may elect to participate on an interscholastic team or in Dance Technique and Composition class. Team choices available for the fall include cross-country, field hockey and volleyball. In the winter the choices are basketball, ice hockey, and squash. The spring electives include lacrosse, softball, and tennis. In each sport, a girl is assigned to a team and each girl is expected to participate in all games scheduled for her team. Mandatory team practice time is scheduled during the school day. In each sport, skill development continues to be emphasized. More advanced team concepts are introduced such as specific attack plays and defense systems.
