Begun in 1986, the Lower School Intern Program at Greenwich
Academy has become a model for many other independent schools across
the country. Created by the need to provide teacher training and
to give its children more individual attention, the Academy's program
has responsibly guided a new generation of teachers.
The Intern Program is a two-year commitment designed for qualified
college graduates with liberal arts backgrounds. It gives aspiring
teachers the opportunity to teach at Greenwich Academy while earning
a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Manhattanville College in
nearby Purchase, New York.
Interns at Greenwich Academy are welcomed into a collegial, supportive
environment, exposed to a variety of effective teaching styles and
offered an array of professional development opportunities including
seminars, outside speakers and career counseling. Interns are full
participants in the classroom experience. Working as part of a team,
they prepare lessons in language arts, mathematics and social studies
and are solely responsible for the science curriculum.
Interns are shaped by the faculty, curriculum and philosophy of
the Academy, and they gain the experience necessary to develop their
own skills before moving on to their own classrooms. Other schools
recruit Academy interns who have completed this program because
of the program's rigorous training and strong philosophical beliefs
about what is important in a school community.
