PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Greenwich Academy chemistry class Greenwich Academy’s commitment to professional development is a signature characteristic of the school. All members of the faculty participate in professional development annually through all-school, division and department initiatives. Faculty members engage in programs designed to improve and refresh individual and collective knowledge not only in primary subject areas but also in such relevant topics as child/adolescent development, pedagogy, technology, diversity and human brain research. These experiences directly improve the quality of teaching, of curriculum and of teacher-student interaction. With the support of generous grants from the school, most individuals supplement this work and pursue further professional enrichment opportunities to remain innovative, thoughtful and energetic in the classroom, to balance their personal and professional needs and, ultimately, to benefit students and the Greenwich Academy community.

"It’s one thing to read about the poet Horace arriving from Rome to Athens with the moon on the Acropolis but to be able to see Athens in person and then explain it to the girls??? Professional development contributes to my expertise and inspires the girls."
"We left the week feeling competent in our ability to listen to people and hear the underlying feeling; confident to guide them to acknowledge the feeling; and able to help people find the counseling help they need."
"This program helped me to recognize opportunities to foster social justice in my teaching."
"More than a class about writing memoirs, the workshop was a rare glimpse into what neuroscience says about creativity and what storytellers do with their minds. It was a memorable workshop---and what more appropriate place to experience and express a sense of creative liberation, inspiration and renewal than Barcelona! It doesn’t get much better than that!"
"The session on Students Remembering Survivors will serve me so well as I teach Night this spring. The presenters have created a nation-wide blog that allows students to share their reflections and prompts them to consider the genocide in Darfur."
